Week 7 of our Top Tip Tuesday focuses on Gas Safety

G – GAS SAFETY
Many workshops use various types of gas and other pressurised cylinders. This can include propane, oxygen, argon, and acetylene. A risk assessment should be undertaken for any activity involving the use of gas and although most people that use them are competent, we have provided some top tips as a reminder for all those fantastic welders and fabricators out there:
Fixed operation
- Prior to operation look for cracks, splits, warping or any other damage which may pose a risk on gauges, regulators, valves, hoses, and torches.
- Make sure no particles of dirt have built up in the cylinder outlet.
- Fume extraction may be required within workshop environments. Extra care should be taken when cutting or welding materials containing zinc, chrome, nickel, or those painted or coated with materials.
- Use welding screens and remove any combustible material that may ignite that is close to the work area.
- Personal protective equipment must be inspected before use. Do not use oxygen to blow down clothing as the oxygen enrichment will increase the rate of burning.
Mobile operation
- Prior to using, ensure that both van doors are open and remain open throughout the use of the propane and oxygen.
- A good ventilation is always required.
- Take care not to enrich the normal atmosphere with oxygen, as small increases will dramatically increase the burning rate of all combustible materials.
- Combustible materials need to be removed from the area prior to welding or cutting.
- Never weld or cut in an area where there is flammable material or explosive dusts and vapours.
- Flashback arrestors should be installed. Due to the length of some hoses, non-return valves are fitted to each blow pipe connection.
