Week 24 of our Top Tip Tuesday focuses on Xplaining it correctly

X – XPLAIN IT CORRECTLY
We know this is cheating but perhaps some credit for improvising. This comes down to communicating the message of health and safety effectively.
You may remember that we have mentioned this in previous top tips but it’s so important to get this right. Arranging training, delivery of toolbox talks, holding meetings and preparing risk assessments are completed to influence behaviour and decision making. That’s why the content of these arrangements need to be explained correctly to ensure it is understood.
Top tips on explaining health and safety effectively
- Use pictures within your documentation. The more visual it is, the more likely people will retain the information.
- Involve people. They are more likely to understand what is expected if they are involved rather than lectured to.
- Keep health and safety meetings an open forum. Allow joint decisions to be made but ensure you clearly explain the parameters.
- Some people prefer 1-2-1 meetings. This is a brilliant way of ensuring health and safety requirements are understood.
- Build in interactive workshops within training courses. Explain what you require and allow attendees to express themselves with their ideas.
